Basketball Scorekeeping Procedures

**Please correct me if I made any mistakes or missed anything. Thanks!

BASKETBALL – SCORE-SHEET PROCEDURE

Before the game:
1.       Get roster from BOTH teams (do this FAST because you only have 10 mins to prepare!)
2.       Fill in general information (ie. game, venue, date, players etc.)
3.       If time allows, it is best to have player numbers in ascending order. (This helps you find the player faster when he/she fouls or scores.)
4.       Ask the coaches to PRINT their name and STAR their starting 5

During the game:
1.       Make sure the score matches with the scoreboard; ALWAYS double check
2.       Don’t add points or fouls to previous periods! Know which PERIOD you are in. Know the symbols for each period.  (  \   /   X   O  )  Overtime is +
3.       Pay attention to the player in possession of the ball! This will help you see the player # when he/she scores.
4.       Pay attention to REFS when he/she signals for a foul. When in doubt, always ask the REFS to repeat the player # / colour.
5.       When a player reaches 5 personal fouls, he/she is immediately off court. Horn and tell REFS for a substitute.
6.       Remember to record TIME-OUTS in correct periods.

After the game:
1.       Total up all the points and make sure it matches with the running score.
2.       At the bottom right corner of the score-sheet:
a.       TIME KEEPER: scoreboard person / shot-clock person
b.      SCORER: score-sheet person (your name)
3.       Ask for REFS’ signature if they permit.
